NZQA registered unit standard 26373 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Conduct five-minute bird counts for conservation management purposes Level 4 Purpose Credits 4 This unit standard is intended for people who conduct or intend to conduct five-minute bird counts for conservation management purposes throughout New Zealand. People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify common birds found in New Zealand forests, describe the purpose of conducting a five-minute bird count, and conduct a five-minute bird count for conservation management purposes. Classification Environment > Conservation Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation relevant to this unit standard may include but is not limited to: Conservation Act 1987, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Local Government Act 2002, Reserves Act 1977, Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975, and Wildlife Act 1953. 2 Definitions Conservation management refers to activities aimed at achieving conservation outcomes and includes but is not limited to maintaining or restoring the diversity of New Zealand’s natural heritage, and/or protecting and promoting New Zealand’s natural history. Organisational requirements refer to instructions to staff on policies, procedures, and methodologies which are documented and are available in the workplace. They are consistent with applicable legislation and any other applicable compliance requirements. Protocol refers to the “Five minute bird count – point counts for an index of relative abundance” developed by the Department of Conservation from Bull, P., Dawson, D., Counting Birds in New Zealand Forests, Notornis Volume 22, part 2,1975. Range birds may include but are not limited to – Bellbird, Silvereye, Warbler, Tomtit, Chaffinch, Fantail, Blackbird, Tui, Rifleman, Kereru; evidence for five birds is required. Evidence requirements 1.1 Birds are identified in terms of their characteristics and in accordance with the protocol. Range visual, audible, behavioural. Outcome 2 Describe the purpose of conducting a five-minute bird count. Evidence requirements 2.1 The purpose of conducting a five-minute bird count is described in accordance with the protocol. Range includes but is not limited to – nationally consistent and comparable data collection, repeatable method. Outcome 3 Conduct five-minute bird counts for conservation management purposes. Range evidence of two counts is required. Evidence requirements 3.1 A five-minute bird count is conducted in accordance with the protocol and organisational requirements. 3.2 Data gathered is recorded in accordance with the protocol and organisational requirements.
