This unit standard is for people working as building or school caretakers.

People credited with this standard are able to: operate a central heating system; and complete end of heating season maintenance on a boiler or a furnace.

Explanatory notes

1 Competence demonstrated during assessment against this standard must comply with the requirements of:

Employment Relations Act 2000;

Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992;

Resource Management Act 1991;

Smoke-free Environments Act 1990;

Approved Code of Practice for the Design, Safe Operation, Maintenance and

Servicing of Boilers , Occupational Health and Safety, 2005;

Health and Safety Code of Practice for Schools , Ministry of Education, 2005.

2 For assessment against this standard a trainee must demonstrate competence in one of the following: coal-fired furnaces, gas-fired boilers, oil-fired boilers up to a capacity of 200 horsepower; and complete seasonal maintenance of the system.

3 Equipment and cleaning agents must be used in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

4 Definition

Industry best practice refers to enterprise or establishment or facility requirements, practices, policy, procedures, methods and protocols which are in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations and New Zealand Standards.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Operate a central heating system.

Evidence requirements

1.1

Fuel supplies are obtained which meet manufacturer’s recommendations for type of boiler or furnace.

1.2 Boiler or furnace is checked prior to igniting in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

1.3

Ignition is completed in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations

Boiler or furnace is cleaned in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations

Range daily, weekly, end of season.

1.5 Boiler or furnace is operated in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations

1.6 Ignition problems are identified, and remedial action is taken immediately on detection.

1.7 Boiler or furnace is maintained in operating condition throughout the season in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

Outcome 2

Complete end of heating season maintenance on a boiler or a furnace.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Boiler or furnace is cleaned in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

2.2 Boiler or furnace is checked, and problems requiring action are noted in accordance with industry best practice.
