Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for
searching of vehicles; conduct physical search of vehicles prior
to entering or present in a security area or security enhanced
area; and respond to the detection of prohibited items.

1
Definition
Prohibited items include weapons, explosives, and firearms as identified in ICAO
Appendix 45.

Reference to enterprise procedures means that all activities must comply with the
requirements contained in the current airport exposition, current airport company
manuals and procedures, where applicable, and any relevant legislative and/or
regulatory requirements, which may include but are not limited to: Civil Aviation Act
1990, relevant Civil Aviation Rules, Aviation Crimes Act 1972, Aviation Security
Services Policies and Procedures, New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Policy.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare for searching of vehicles.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Legislative requirements relevant to searching of vehicles at airports are
identified and complied with in accordance with enterprise procedures.
1.2
Search equipment is tested in accordance with enterprise procedures.
1.3
Situations requiring a physical search of vehicles to enter or present in a
security area or security enhanced area are recognised in accordance with
legislation and enterprise procedures.
1.4
Consent of the driver or vehicle owner to conducting a physical vehicle search
is obtained in accordance with enterprise procedures.

1.5
Action is taken in response to persons not consenting in accordance with
legislation and enterprise procedures.
1.6
Personal protective equipment is maintained and worn at all times to
professional standards and assignment requirements in accordance with
enterprise procedures.
Outcome 2
Conduct physical search of vehicles prior to entering or present in a security area or
security enhanced area.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Physical searches are carried out in accordance with legislation and enterprise
procedures.
2.2
Physical searches are conducted at the designated searching point or
anywhere within the security area or security enhanced area and, unless the
vehicle is unlocked, with the driver or owner present in accordance with
enterprise procedures.
Range
may include but are not limited to – vehicle, driver, passenger, items
carried.
2.3
Occupational health and safety procedures are followed during physical
searches of vehicles in accordance with enterprise procedures.
2.4
Customer service principles and standards are applied throughout the search
process in accordance with enterprise procedures.
2.5
If a person does not consent to the physical search, that person is not permitted
to enter or remain in the security area or security enhanced area and escalation
occurs in accordance with enterprise procedures.
Outcome 3
Respond to the detection of prohibited items.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Procedures are followed in response to the detection of prohibited items in
accordance with enterprise procedures.

Please note
Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, or
an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading
to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies
to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The
CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing
