This unit standard is for people new to the fellmongery or leather processing industries.

People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: product reception, storage, use, and markets; and fellmongery processing methods, machinery types, operation, capabilities, and monitoring requirements, for sheepskin fellmongery products.

Organisational requirements

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of product reception, storage, use, and markets for sheepskin fellmongery products.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Raw products received by the fellmongery department are identified in terms of types, amounts and sources.

1.2 The handling, storage, and processing methods are described for each type of raw product received.

1.3 End products are described in terms of their uses.

The main markets for each end product are identified and described in terms of end use and purchasing country.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate knowledge of fellmongery processing methods, machinery types, operation, capabilities, and monitoring requirements for sheepskin fellmongery products.

Evidence requirements

2.1 The use of processing chemicals is described in terms of their effects on raw products.

2.2 Methods for handling each type of processing chemical are described in terms of organisational requirements.

2.3 Fellmongery machinery and its position and function in the fellmongery process is identified and described in terms of type.

2.4 The output capabilities of each machine are described in terms of the fellmongery process.

2.5 Operator responsibilities are identified and described in terms of monitoring and maintaining individual machines.

2.6 The procedures for handling machine malfunctions and breakdowns are described in terms of organisational requirements.
