Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare and
deliver a speech in complex Vagahau Niue on an unfamiliar
topic to an unfamiliar audience.

Explanatory notes
1
Definitions
Vagahau Niue refers to the authentic Niue language. This unit standard involves
both written and spoken Vagahau Niue;
Speech could include presenting a point of view on an issue, reporting orally on an
investigation or survey, presenting orally an article or literary text;
Complex refers to a wider range of vocabulary and tenses in sentences containing
one or more dependent clauses, and more complicated grammatical structures;
Unfamiliar refers to topics and settings that are outside the learner’s normal personal
experience
Unfamiliar audience refers to five or more persons not known to the learner.

Evidence is required from one speech of a minimum length of five minutes. Notes
and/or visual aids are prepared, to be used as unobtrusive speaking prompts.

Language used must be in Vagahau Niue and may be spoken with village-based
dialectal differences and intonation.

Endorsement of village language variation may be conducted by pulotu, village or
community appointed experts.

Achievement of the evidence requirements allows for few minor errors in grammar,
vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation. Minor errors must not obscure the
meaning.

Information to be conveyed is consistent with the selected topic.

The preparation of the speech demonstrates that the topic is understood by the
candidate.

Deliver a speech in complex Vagahau Niue on a less familiar topic to an unfamiliar
audience.
Evidence requirements
2.1
The speech is well-structured, and includes the use of protocols suited to
context and audience.
2.2
The information conveyed is consistent with the selected topic.
2.3
A wide variety of complex vocabulary and language structures is used in the
speech in accordance with the context and situation.
2.4
Any visual aids used illustrate and/or enhance the speech.
