Explanatory Notes 1 This achievement standard is derived from The Arts Learning Area of The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2007, and relates to the strands Developing Ideas, Communicating and Interpreting, and Understanding the Arts in Context for Drama Level 8. It also relates to the material in the latest version of the Teaching and Learning Guide for Drama, Ministry of Education, at http://seniorsecondary.tki.org.nz. 2 Script a drama suitable for live performance involves producing a credible, original work that can stand on its own, communicates an intention, depicts character(s), and is able to be performed with dramatic pace and tension. It may involve: research formulation of dramatic intention decisions around structure drafting formatting standing up the script, or sections of it refining, which will be a repeated process a rehearsed, enacted play reading of the whole script. The scripting must be undertaken by an individual working on his/her own. Script an effective drama suitable for live performance involves producing a compelling work that captures the essence of the dramatic context, and has impact and originality. 3 The final script uses formatting and conventions appropriate to the style and intention of the drama. These include: title and playwright indication of the dramatic intention and form and/or style cast list, and role notes information about the background to the play information about the setting textual conventions that identify who is speaking, with spaces between each piece of dialogue, for example acts and scenes instructions to the actors about attitude and/or emotional states stage directions pausing, silences technical directions about lighting, sound, set, props, and costumes. 4 One rehearsed, enacted play reading or performance, and the written script are required.
