Introduction and Departmental Summary – The Office of Disability Services completed its
38th year of service to the students, faculty and staff of Wright State University. The
Office employs 7 professional staff, 3 support staff, 3 SOPP practicum students, 1
graduate assistant and approximately 150 student employees. The office provides
services to over 550 students who have documented physical, learning and psychological
disabilities. These services are divided into five main categories: physical support,
academic support, technological support, vocational support, and an assessment unit.
During the 2010-11 academic year, the Office of Disability Services asked all of its
consumers to rate their level of satisfaction of all its services through the annual on-line
ODS survey. The survey was sent to 542 students and a total of 113 responded to the
survey. The overall results of the survey are included in the findings below.
The Office of Disability Services is responsible for teaching three sections of the
freshman seminar class (UVC101). The department evaluated those sections. The
results are included in the findings below.
1. ASSESSMENT MEASURES EMPLOYED
The average cumulative GPA for each student for 2010-2011 was compared to the
average cumulative GPA for the entire student body during the same period.
The average number of hours attempted by each student for 2010-11 was compared to
the average number of hours for the entire student body during the same period.
Student’s opinions rated on the annual Office of Disability Services on-line survey.
2. ASSESSMENT FINDINGS
A majority of the students are satisfied with the entire array of services provided by ODS
(1.69 rating with 1 being excellent).
The cumulative GPA of students with physical disabilities using the Office of Disability
Services is the same as the GPA of the general student body on the main campus.
The cumulative GPA of students with learning disabilities using the Office of Disability
Services is 10 percent lower than the GPA of the general student body on the main
campus.
The average number of hours attempted by all students with disabilities using the Office
of Disability Services is the same or higher than 72.6 percent of the general student
body on the main campus.
The retention rate of all new students using services in ODS was .8 percent higher than
the general student body on the main campus for 2010-11. This is 5 percent higher
than last year.
The majority of students enrolled in ODS UVC courses felt being in the courses helped
them to adjust to college and WSU (1.8 rating with 1 being excellent).
The cumulative GPA of the students enrolled in all of the UVC courses taught by ODS
staff was 2.39 which is 18 percent lower than the general student body on the main
campus for 2010-11.
Seventy percent of the students who enrolled in the ODS UVC courses have been
retained and are still enrolled in Wright State University.
2. PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS
During the study it was revealed that some of the students were not taught how to study
while in high school due to the level of assistance provided to them. As a result, the
Office of Disability Services will do the following:
Develop an ED101 study skills course for students below a 2.0 fall quarter with focus
on how to study, organizational skills and time management.
Recruitment for the class will be through sending letters to the student’s home
addresses over winter break with follow-up emails to the students who do not enroll
as a result of the letters.
