Athletics Council Meeting

1. Meeting called to order at 8:00 a.m. by AC Chair, Dan Krane.
2. Minutes from May 2010 meeting of the Athletics Council approved.
3. Guest Speaker: WSU Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Dan Abrahamowitz
a. Dr. A commented on the responsibilities charged to the committee and how he
appreciates the committees’ dedication to carrying out those duties. Dr. A. also spoke
about fulfilling NCAA requirements and University requirements for Athletics. Lastly,
Dr. A shared his appreciation for the academic side of Athletics Council.
4. Committee Missions
a. Steering Committee
i. Committee Chair Dan Krane mentioned this committee will be researching the
the roles of FARS on other campuses
b. Academic Affairs
i. Committee Chair Judy Chivers stated that this committee will review studentathlete grade, academic progress, major changes, and APR
c. Constitution and Bylaws
i. Committee Chair Jeff John reported this committee will conduct reviews of the
constitution and bylaws, accept recommendations, and present information
back to Athletics Council
d. Diverse Student-Athlete Advocacy
i. Committee Chair Steve Fortson discussed
the importance of this committee monitoring academic progress of
diverse student-athlete and the make-up of athletic administration.
e. Student Welfare Committee
i. Committee Chair Steve Fortson mentioned that this committee will oversee the
student-athlete exit interviews and the operations of Sports Medicine.
f. Gender Equity

i. Mary Kenton discussed how Title 9 applies to intercollegiate athletics, equity
in athletics disclosure, and the upcoming certification visit from NCAA.
G. Ad-Hoc Committee – Blackboard to Backboard Challenge
i. Committee Chair Jeff John explained the developments of the challenge and
and mentioned that the following dates have been designated as Blackboard to
Backboard games: Men’s Basketball Dates are January 14, February 3,
February 7, and February 19. The Women’s Basketball dates are January 6,
January 27, February 17, and March 3.

Ad-Hoc Committee – Pre Game Lecture Series
i. Committee Chair Dan Krane announced that on February 25, the College
of Science & Math will be hosting the Pre Game Lecture series.
5. Faculty Athletic Representatives
a. FAR Steve Fortson announced that former FAR, Beth Sorenson, has taken another
position at Ohio Northern University. WSU will now only have 1 FAR.
6. SAAC Report
a. Louie Haney gave a report on upcoming community service projects and future
SAAC meeting dates and times. The meeting dates and times will be attached to the
next Athletics Council email. All meetings are open to the public.
7. Athletic Director’s Report and Spring Sport’s Update
a. AD Grant reported on the Athletic Council and Athletics Staff meeting at
Fricker’s on Oct. 7th for lunch. The Rinzler Project is still on schedule. Linda
Garza, Head Softball Coach, has resigned to take an Associate Head Coach
position at Cal-Poly. The Athletics Department budget is improving. Horizon
League McCafferty Points were at highest total since 2003. Sponsorships are
up. Platinum seats are now at a waiting list only status. Athletics is gaining
more exposure outside of the Southwest Ohio region. Basketball Schedule
has significantly been upgraded by adding schools such as, Indiana,
Cincinnati, Air Force, and Charlotte.
8. Update on New Five Year Plan
a.
Mo Cooper explained that there is currently no space for a track. WSU
Administration and Athletics are working diligently to be more creative in getting a
track here on campus.

a. Athletics Council/Athletics Staff lunch at Fricker’s (Thursday, Oct. 7, noon)
b. Next AC Steering Meeting (Friday, Oct. 22, 8:30 AM)
c. Next AC Meeting (Friday, October 29, 8 AM, Atlantis Room, Student Union)
