Definitions
Individual learning plan is used in this document to include the following for young
people with special needs: individual education plan, individual development plan,
individual family plan, individual transition plan and individual plan (IP).
A programme is part of the individual learning plan process and is the implementation
of the teaching strategies for the learning goals set at the planning meeting.
Implementation of programme involves carrying out a planned programme and
reviewing the success of that programme.
Young people refers to young children, children, and adolescents.
Family/whānau is defined as parents, guardians and members of the extended family
who have an interest in the child.

This unit standard is intended for those who work in an assisting role with young
people in education settings. This includes working in a manner appropriate to
different cultural groups.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of individual learning plans.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Individual learning plans are described in terms of their purpose and
components.
Range
1.2
Individual learning plans are described in terms of teaching resources,
strategies, current practice, and the sequence of procedures.
Range
1.3
components include – summary of current assessment, learning
goals, responsibilities for participants, adaptations, monitoring,
time of review.
includes – reason for having an individual learning plan,
assessment, planning meeting, writing individual learning plan,
preparation of individual learning programme, implementation of
the learning programme, monitoring and reviewing the
programme.
The roles, rights and responsibilities of those involved are described in terms of
the preparation and implementation of an individual learning plan.
Range
must include – teacher aide, the young person, their
family/whānau;
and any two of – teacher, early intervention teacher, interpreters,
other professionals.
Outcome 2
Participate in the development of an individual learning plan meeting.
Evidence requirements
2.1
The candidate’s role is described in terms of participation in the development of
a learning plan for a young person.
2.2
The individual learning plan for the young person is developed in conjunction
with the supervising teacher.

Participate in the implementation of an individual learning plan.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Teaching strategies for identified learning goals are described and
demonstrated.
teaching strategies may include but are not limited to – modelling,
prompting, providing encouragement, reinforcement, setting
achievable tasks, assisting only when necessary, pace of
instructions;
evidence of four is required.
Range
3.2
Interactions that facilitate the achievement of learning goals by a young person
are demonstrated.
3.3
Adaptations of tasks and materials that facilitate the achievement of learning
goals by a young person are made.
3.4
Progress of young person’s learning is monitored and feedback given using
agreed procedures, associated with the assisting role.

Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies
to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMRs). The
CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing
to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors
and assessors, and special resource requirements.
