This unit standard may be of interest to people working at a snowsport or mountain area or who move around the mountain environment. entry information: Prerequisites: Unit 6400, Manage first aid in emergency situations; Unit 18134, Demonstrate knowledge of avalanche phenomena; and Unit 21740 Demonstrate use of avalanche transceivers, shovels and probes; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. accreditation option: Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry. moderation option: A centrally established and directed national moderation system has been set up by Sport, Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation. special notes: 1 People undertaking assessment against this unit standard must be able to move around a mountain environment, and need to be able to meet the clothing and equipment requirements for the mountains. 2 All activities must comply with any relevant environmental, legislative and/or regulatory requirements set out in the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation Act 2001, and their subsequent amendments. Elements and Performance Criteria element 1 Demonstrate own party avalanche rescue. performance criteria 1.1 Techniques are described for improving personal survival in an avalanche accident and/or incident. Range: 1.2 Techniques are described for increasing the chances of a successful rescue of others in the party. Range: 1.3 last seen point, scene safety, calling for back-up or assistance, access to site. Search techniques are demonstrated for rescuing others involved in a simulated accident and/or incident. Range: 1.4 discarding equipment, angling away from danger area, ‘swimming’ movement, airspace in front of face, hand raised above surface, keeping calm. visual search, transceiver search, probing, digging. Basic life support techniques are performed in a simulated rescue on avalanche victims. Information to be communicated to search and rescue personnel or snowsport area base command is described.
