1 Definitions

Light vehicle refers to classes as listed from Land Transport New Zealand website table http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/publications/infosheets/infosheet-1-

10.html#classes : passenger vehicle MA, MB, MC; omnibus MD, MD1, MD2; and goods vehicle NA.

Service information may include but is not limited to

– technical information of a vehicle, machine, or product detailing operation; installation and servicing procedures; manufacturer instructions and specifications; technical terms and descriptions; and detailed illustrations. This can be accessed in hard copy or electronic format and is normally sourced from the manufacturer.

2 This unit standard can lead on to Unit 919, Demonstrate knowledge of light vehicle automatic transmission components, and fault diagnosis procedures .

Demonstrate knowledge of automatic transmission operation.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Transmission construction is described in accordance with service information.

Range features, identification of components, layout of components; inline, transaxle.

1.2 Transmission operation in each selection is described in accordance with service information.

1.3 Functions of components are identified in accordance with service information.

Range includes but is not limited to – planetary gear sets, hydraulic system, seals and gaskets, torque converter, shift control

(computer controls; non-computerised controls

– governor, vacuum modulator, throttle cable).

Demonstrate knowledge of automatic transmission servicing requirements.

Evidence requirements

2.1 The importance of cleanliness when working with transmission components is identified.

Range contamination, precise machining tolerances and close operating fits of components, damage and premature failure.

2.2 Faults which affect the transmission operation are described in accordance with service information.

Range contamination, leakage, incorrect adjustments, lack of service, external factors.

2.3 Servicing requirements are described in accordance with service information.

Range fluid change, adjustments, tests, visual inspection.
