2009 Compliance Audit Summary Final Review
Athletic Department presented the completion schedule for the items that were recommendations
in the 2009 Division I compliance audit. All recommendations have been addressed and
implemented with the exception of the random sampling of admissions, financial aid awards and
recruiting documentation. The Department is scheduled to undergoing a Division II audit of
income and expenses, which has included reviewing the compliance areas addressed in the
Division I audit. Al Decker, from the University’s Department of Audits, will be conducting both
the income and expense audit, as well as, the random sampling. This has been the normal
procedure of the Division II audit since 1997. The findings will be presented to the Campus
Athletic Committee upon completion of the audit.
NCAA Five-Year Study
Every five years, each Division II institution is required by the NCAA to complete the five-year
study and UMD’s will be due by June, 2011. This study looks into compliance issues such as
institutional oversight, budgetary control, recruiting, financial aid and strategic initiatives of the
Athletic Department in areas such as their philosophy statement, health and safety of their
student-athletes, cultural diversity, gender equity and life in balance of an athlete. Dr. Jennifer
Mencl (LSBE), Dr. Al Mensinger (FAR) and (Bill Haller, Director, Student-Athlete Services and
Compliance Coordinator) will meet after the Study becomes available to discuss the distribution
of the Study and supporting documentation among faculty, senior administrators, coaches and
student-athletes.
2009-10 NSIC All-Academic Team
UMD had more athletes named to the 2009-10 conference all-academic teams than any other
NSIC Conference institution. With 123 athletes meeting the minimum criteria of a cumulative
grade point average of 3.2 or better, be a member of a varsity traveling team, reached sophomore
athletic and academic standing and have completed at least one full academic year at the
institution.
Division II Academic Success Rate
Athletic Department distributed the graduation data for the 2003-04 cohort. The report reflected
that, according to the criteria of this NCAA study the student-athletes are graduating at a rate
higher than the non-athlete population in the previous 6 years (61% to 52%), as well as in the
four class average (57% to 51%).
Division I Graduation Rate
This report reflected the Division I men and women hockey players are graduating at a single
year rate of 97% for the men and 98% for the women. The multi-four year average is 96% for
both the men and women. This report is completed for every Division I sport and any sport that
falls below a 92% rate is subject to NCAA penalties of loss of scholarships, loss of practice
opportunities or loss of post season play.
