People credited with this unit standard are able to engage in
personal and transactional conversations in basic Vagahau
Niue in predictable contexts.

1
Definitions
Vagahau Niue refers to the language of Niue. This unit standard involves spoken
Vagahau Niue;
Context refers to communicative situations, topics and settings appropriate to spoken
Niue;
Predictable refers to topics and settings that are within the learner’s likely personal
experience;
Basic refers to simple sentences, simple compound sentences and limited
vocabulary;
Personal conversation refers to conversation conveying or seeking information of a
personal nature, such as details about self or family;
Transactional conversation refers to conversation conveying or seeking information
to achieve an outcome, such as a purchase or acquiring timetable information.

Evidence is required from one personal conversation and one transactional
conversation, with a minimum involvement of one minute in each conversation.

Clarification or repetition of information may be sought or provided, where required,
to maintain the conversation.

Language used must be in Vagahau Niue and may be spoken with village-based
dialectal differences and intonation.

Endorsement of village language variation may be conducted by pulotu, village or
community appointed experts.

Achievement of the evidence requirements allows for hesitation, or minor errors in
grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation.

The transaction is completed in accordance with the requirement of the
communicative task.
2.2
Protocols are observed for transactional conversation with another person.
2.3
A variety of vocabulary and language structures is used to perform the
transaction in accordance with the context.

NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
