UMD's RAID:
Unprecedented Research
"No one has ever tried drilling into the deep ice like this at either pole," said Goodge. "We will
get deeper and older paleoclimate records, possibly a million to a million and a half years old.
We are searching for the oldest ice ever found. We're also hopeful we can reach the geological
formations at the base of the ice sheet; they've never been reached before." (more)

Guitar Heroes
With the flip of a switch, seniors Nick Robillard, Miles Pearson, and Charlie Farrell surged their
innovation superpowers and blasted from student status into the orbit of rock stars. Inspiration
was the song/pause/song pattern that concertgoers endure as guitarists fiddle with their foot
pedal, the gadget that provides different effects for their instruments.(more)
Fishing for Results
UMD biology major Loranzie Rogers, or L.J., has a lot to be proud of right now. His research is
going well, he recently won an award and $700 scholarship from the Minnesota Chapter of the
American Fisheries Society (AFS), and next summer he will travel to Woods Hole, Mass., with
Professor Allen Mensinger to conduct more research.(more)
University Honors Journal Broadens Student Perspectives
Swenson College civil engineering major Matthew McDermott, is a University Honor student
who contributed to annual journal “Working with the online publication process
for Aisthesis was something new,” This opportunity has inspired students to “do bigger and
better things,” Matthew said. “When there is someone standing right in front of you displaying
their success, it makes it seem more possible.” (more)
Creating Excitement! UMD's Active Learning Classrooms
“Students who learn in active learning classrooms (ALC) are more engaged and more likely to
stay in their program,” said UMD Physics and Astronomy Department Chair Marc Seiger.
Seiger's already seen how UMD ALCs have transformed the classroom experience. "Open the
door a crack and you'll hear laughter, lively discussion and an occasional, 'I've got it, I've got it,'"
he said. (more)

SCIENCE ON DECK
The scientists and staff of UMD's Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) invite the public to board and
tour the research vessel Blue Heron and indulge in science. During 2016 we will continue to
offer the popular "LLO Science On Deck," with presentations on scientific topics on a Friday in
each of the spring, summer and fall months. This year the dates for "LLO Science On Deck" will
be May 27th, July 22nd, August 26th and September 23rd. (more)
Congratulations Graduates
On Saturday, May 7th at the DECC, 1,975 UMD students took part in commencement
ceremonies. Senator Al Franken was on hand as commencement speaker and personally
congratulated the more than 400 Swenson College grads that participated in the ceremony as
they walked across the stage.
Congratulations to all of our undergraduate and graduate students for this major milestone. To

New Members of the Order
One quick way to identify an engineer is to look for a stainless steel band on one of their pinky
fingers. The ring is a sign that someone has taken a special oath and joined the Order of the
Engineer. On May 6, 2016, 94 Swenson College of Science and Engineering students and one
faculty member took part in a ceremony welcoming them to the Order. A big crowd of UMD
faculty, staff and students as well as the participants’ family and friends gathered in the Marshall
Performing Arts Center to mark the occasion.
The Order of the Engineer in the United States began in 1970 and is modeled after a Canadian
program. It is not a membership organization with meetings or dues, rather it is intended to
encourage pride and responsibility in the engineering profession. Those that decide to join the
Order, take an oath called the “Obligation of the Engineer” and are presented with a stainless
steel ring to be worn on the pinky finger of the dominant hand. The oath is a solemn obligation to
oneself “to uphold devotion to the standards and diginity of the engineering profession” and to
turn to “practical use, the principles of science and the means of technology . . . to serve
humanity by making the best use of Earth’s precious wealth.”
Swenson College Dean Joshua Hamilton was there to congratulate each participant. There were
37 students participating from the Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department, ten from
Civil Engineering, 16 from Electrical Engineering and 32 from Chemical Engineering.

Air Force Officers Commissioned at UMD
Congratulations to the University of Minnesota Duluth students recently commissioned as
second lieutenants in the United States Air Force. On Saturday, May 7, 2016, ten graduating
seniors were awarded officer commissions for successfully completing the Reserve Officer’s
Training Corps (ROTC) and attaining a bachelor’s degree.
Completing ROTC is no small task as students must stay in good physical condition, participate
in a four-year training program that teaches leadership skills, and finish the courses required to
attain their degree. At the ceremony, the graduates are sworn in and receive their first salute.
Family members are also given the chance to pin gold bars denoting the second lieutenant rank
onto the new officers’ uniforms. This year’s ceremony included two World War II veterans on
hand to salute the students and congratulate them on their new rank.
The AFROTC program is hosted within UMD’s Swenson College of Science and Engineering
due to its emphasis on related fields of study. From here, the graduates will receive training for
their career field and be on active duty in the Air Force for at least four years.
The newly designated USAF officers, their majors and postings are: Samantha Bowman from
Civil Engineering – unmanned aerial vehicle pilot at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas; Tyler
Brunjes from Mechanical Engineering – civil engineer at Malmstrom Air Force Base in
Montana; Gage Buchli from Criminology – unmanned aerial vehicle pilot at Randolph Air Force
Base in Texas; Britian Conley from Management Information Systems – cyberspace operations
officer at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi; David Kirkland from Finance – contracting
officer at Beale Air Force Base in California; Lauren Novak from Mechanical Engineering –
intelligence officer at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas; Nathan Meyer from Mechanical
Engineering – pilot at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas; Nolan Myre from Criminology –
financial management at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho; Riley Snyder from
Psychology – pilot at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas; and Zachary Weaver from Civil
Engineering – pilot at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas.
Congratulations to all of these graduates and here’s wishing you all the best in your new role!
