The Chancellor is pleased to announce the official search process to identify and select two Deans of Instruction for Berkeley City
College. The Peralta Colleges are located in the beautiful Oakland/San Francisco Bay Area, an area which leads the world in
technology and innovation. This District is seeking an individual who will become part of the Chancellor’s team responsible for
implementing an ambitious agenda in advanced training and higher education to serve all segments of a culturally diverse urban
community. The District serves six cities in the East Bay. The Peralta Colleges have a reputation for developing effective approaches
to serving the varied interests and needs of the community. The District was founded in 1964, serves 29,000 students, and is one of
the top community college districts in California in transferring students into the University of California system.
Berkeley City College is located in downtown Berkeley, just blocks from the University of California – Berkeley. The energetic new
urban campus houses state‐of‐the‐art facilities and stands on the cutting edge of community college education. University
preparation and career training classes form the core of the Berkeley City College curriculum, which also features model programs in
fields as diverse as American Sign Language, Biotechnology, and Multimedia Arts.
BCC serves a diverse population of 7,500 students. The faculty and staff are involved in campus‐wide initiatives to strengthen
instruction, increase student supports, and engage students through a variety of means. The commitment to student success is
widely shared and cuts across transfer, CTE, and basic skills programs.

THE POSITION
The Dean of Instruction supports the college’s academic departments and programs, working with department chairs and program
coordinators across Instruction. This position is one of two Instructional Dean positions at BCC; the Dean reports to the Vice
President of Instruction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties/essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 Provides vision and leadership for a diverse, dynamic and innovative community of faculty, staff and students.
 Assigns teaching loads and related activities to faculty; supports and encourages the professional growth of the faculty.
 Provides year-round leadership, management, participation and development of instructional department day, evening,
weekend, inter-session and summer programs.
 Assists in the hiring process of management, faculty and classified staff for assigned area and recommend personnel actions
to supervising manager.
 Assists in the training and evaluation of assigned supervisors, faculty and classified staff.
 Organizes and manages the operation of the assigned area office; coordinates and administers its budget.

In collaboration with faculty, develops curriculum, supports a variety of methods of instruction, including computer-assisted
instruction and distance learning, and ensures course and program articulations are kept current.
With division faculty, staff, and other administrators, manages the preparation of the class schedules, catalogs, brochures
and other printed or electronic materials for the assigned division(s).
Facilitates grant applications for assigned area, manages grants, and prepares required reports.
Serves as liaison to other college areas and services, advisory committees, individual students and student groups, and
appropriate university, school and other off-campus and community groups.
Serves as a member of the District and community committees, commissions and councils, as appropriate.
Pursues contract education opportunities with business and other organizations in the community.
Organizes, manages and participates in the annual planning and budgeting process in cooperation with managers,
supervisors, faculty and classified staff and in concert with college goals.
Manages the approved annual budget for assigned area.
Accurately interprets applicable laws, regulations and collective bargaining contract provisions.
Responds to and seeks resolution of complaints arising from division/area activities, including participating in the process of
collective bargaining contract grievances.
Provides leadership for and assists with departmental program reviews and unit plans.
Assists in accreditation process.
Supports a climate that promotes innovation and improved service to students and the community; cooperates with area
staff and other managers to develop processes that are student friendly and supportive of student success.
Manages and participates in the continued evaluation and improvement of the assigned area’s instructional programs.
Promotes the assessment of student outcomes in order to determine the effectiveness of student learning and student
development programs in the area.
Assists in the coordination of area programs with those of other institutions and in the development of partnerships with
external agencies.
Actively participates in and supports college and District shared governance components and activities and other
collaborative processes.
Employs appropriate techniques and strategies to resolve disputes and to enhance communication and cooperation among
the members of the college and District communities.
Interprets and analyzes appropriate laws, policies, rules and procedures to determine impact on assigned instructional or
student services division or program area and oversee compliance and reporting strategies.
Travels throughout the District in carrying out responsibilities and functions.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1.
Possession of a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university, and meets minimum qualifications within one of the
Peralta Community College District faculty service areas.
2.
One year of formal training, internship or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s assignment.
3.
Knowledge and proficiency in the operation and use of personal computers utilizing office productivity software applications
(i.e., work processing, spreadsheet and database management software) including the Internet.
4.
Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and disability and ethnic
backgrounds of community college students.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS







1.
Possession of a Ph.D. or Ed.D. Degree from an accredited college or university.
Knowledge of Education Code, Federal and State Laws, and current practice appropriate to instruction.
Understands and has experience implementing integrated planning and student learning outcomes assessment.
Five years of higher education experience, preferably in a California community college.
Substantial faculty experience.
Experience in a multi-college district.
Four (4) years of comprehensive and increasingly responsible management experience in instruction, or a related field.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a full-time, twelve-month academic management position. The annual salary range is $110,000 - $120,000. Salary placement
is commensurate with education and experience. (Salary is subject to reduction as a result of furlough days.)

through employee pre-tax dollars. Credit union membership and prepaid legal plan participation are also available.
Other benefits include 22 days vacation leave, 12 days sick leave, and 18 holidays.
