Peralta Community College District Board Policy # 5.64 Policy 5.64 Textbook Ordering Peralta Community College District encourages its faculty members to pursue academic and intellectual endeavors that would directly contribute to the quality of their classroom instruction, including but not limited to publishing original works of literature, research, and art for use in the classroom. Self-Publishing. A faculty member shall not be prohibited from self-publishing and choosing his/her self-published textbook as a teaching tool for his/her own class, even if the faculty member receives royalties from the sale of his/her self-published textbook. A faculty member shall not be prohibited from communicating with other faculty members, including his/her Department Chair and College Dean, to advocate that his/her selfpublished textbook be adopted by the Department and/or College. Textbook Adoption. All textbooks, including publications authored by District faculty members, must be adopted according to District procedures before students are required to buy them for classroom use. To avoid the appearance of impropriety and undue influence, the author of the textbook being considered for adoption must recuse him/herself prior to any vote affecting the adoption of the textbook. Textbook Ordering and Duplication. All self-published textbooks authored by the instructor and readers developed by the instructor shall be duplicated in the College bookstore, the College copying service department, or a copying service designated by the College. All other textbooks may be bought from other locations, including but not limited to, other bookstores and the internet. No textbook shall be sold and distributed in the classroom or by the instructor. Purchase of Textbook Desk Copy. All desk copies shall be made free-of-charge by the College bookstore and/or the College copying service department upon approval from the College President or his/her designee.
