People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to remove and remove coating systems from aircraft, aircraft components, or aeronautical equipment by plastic media blasting in cabinets or by using open blasting machines; and complete finishing activities.

Explanatory note

All tasks are to be carried out in accordance with enterprise procedures, the enterprise being the organisation carrying out the work. Enterprise procedures referred to in this unit standard are the applicable procedures found in the following: enterprise exposition; manufacturer publications; Government and local body legislation; airworthiness authority requirements.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Prepare to remove the coating system from aircraft, aircraft components, or aeronautical equipment.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Task is determined by reviewing documentation and enterprise procedures.

1.2 Resources are obtained and checked for serviceability or status in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Range publications, materials, equipment, safety equipment, clothing, hazard warning signs.

1.3 Aircraft, aircraft components, or aeronautical equipment identification is matched with documentation.

1.4 Environment is established in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Range temperature, lighting, ventilation, work area secured.

Ground equipment is positioned in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Aircraft, aircraft component, or aeronautical equipment is prepared and masked in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Range may include but is not limited to

– substrate identification, skin mapping.

Outcome 2

Remove the coating system from aircraft, aircraft components, or aeronautical equipment.

Range plastic media blasting in cabinets, open blasting machines.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Pre-removal processes are carried out in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Range may include but is not limited to

– earthed, Aero Almen strip test, stand-off distance calculated, blast impingement angle calculated, dwell time calculated, nozzle/hose line pressure test, media purity confirmed.

2.2 Coating is removed using plastic media blasting in accordance with enterprise procedures.

2.3 Aircraft, aircraft components, or aeronautical equipment are washed or cleaned in accordance with enterprise procedures.

2.4 Aircraft, aircraft components, or aeronautical equipment masking is removed in accordance with enterprise procedures.

2.5 Inspections are obtained in accordance with enterprise procedures.

Range may include but is not limited to

– independent, duplicate, progressive, surface roughness scans.

Outcome 3

Complete finishing activities.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Resources are checked for serviceability in accordance with enterprise procedures.

3.2 Waste and surplus materials are disposed of or recycled in accordance with enterprise procedures.
