Math classes were cut drastically last several years. Merritt offered 23 sections in Fall 2010 while Laney is offering 100 sections, Berkeley City College is offering 48 sections, and College of Alameda is offering 41 sections.
Criteria 2. Semester-end departmental enrollment pattern for last three years.

Math productivity and class size have increased except Math Workshops
(Math 270-Math 273).
Class size is above optimal (25 - 35 students) levels for this discipline.

Criteria 5. Position is authorized and in the budget.
The position should be authorized and Norbert’s position was never filled.
If the PFT Contract extension expires without another extension on June 30,
2011, 3 contract faculty may be anticipated to retire next year .
Criteria 6. Upon justification to the District, a College may be granted a faculty position to start a new program or to enhance an existing one.
The Math Department has not been offering Calculus sequence classes for
Math/Engineering transfer students. With an additional full time faculty and support from school not to cancel Calculus sequence classes, the Math department would like to offer Calculus sequences to meet prerequisite for
Physics, to get an AS degree in Math, to help Engineering transfer students to take classes at Merritt without driving to the other campus.
Criteria 7. Additional Justification.
We need to fill two (2) Math positions because: a) At least 6 sections have an initial enrollment of 60 or more students. b) Almost all sections except Math Workshops were closed before the first day of class in Fall semester. c) The scope of the basic skills challenge faced by the Department and we like to limit maximum enrollment to no more than 35 students per basic skills class to give more attention to students who need to build up their math/critical thinking/study skills.
