Economic & Workforce Development Summary of Work in the Last Month
March 11, 2016













Work with Laney and Merritt College, Growth Sector, Las Positas College, and
Lawrence Livermore National Lab to submit an IDRC grant proposal to the
CCCCO by March 4 to support Laney and Merritt’s computer science and
Cyber Security pathway programs.
Facilitate District-wide collaboration on the Basic Skills and Student
Outcomes Transformation grant opportunity.
Work with Laney College and CSU East Bay (as lead) and other partners on a
proposal submitted 3.6.16 for the DOL Tech Hire grant opportunity.
Work with Laney College, the California Emerging Technology Fund (as lead),
Urban Strategies Council, and others on another proposal in response to the
DOL Tech Hire grant opportunity.
Work with Laney College and UC Davis to develop a proposal to Intel for
strengthening engineering pathways from Peralta to UC Davis and increasing
the URM student representation in that transfer pathway.
Work with Merritt, Laney and COA on two proposals responding to the
Oakland Workforce Development Board’s RFP to fund two “Sector Access
Points” as part of the Oakland workforce delivery system. Laney and Merritt
are each submitting proposals that would help strengthen their Career
Center and related functions.
Launch the Irvine-funded “Bridging the Gap” initiative that enables all four of
the Peralta Colleges to work with counterparts at OUSD, BUSD, and CSU East
Bay to improve math pathways, reduce the need for remediation, and
improve student transitions and success across educational segments.
Serve on the COA CTE Dean hiring committee.
Chair the Ed. Services hiring committee for a new staff assistant.
Participate in Grants Management meetings at three of the Peralta Colleges
with representatives of Finance & Administration (as part of the new, interdepartmental grants management team formed by Ed. Services and Finance
to improve grants administration systems)
Participate in meetings with community organizations: Hack the Hood, Unity
Council, Oakland Private Industry Council, Lao Family, the Bay Area Business
Roundtable, the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and others
with whom we are collaborating on grants and projects
Organize and help facilitate a meeting between the four Peralta College
equity plan leads and select CBO’s interested in collaborating with the
colleges more closely (efforts that grew out of the Adult Education
Consortium meetings facilitated by Consortium representatives) – facilitate
next steps.
Facilitate the CPT Work-Based Learning Committee to help align high school
and college systems and processes for engaging employers and scaling workbased learning opportunities for students.









Facilitate a meeting of the four Peralta Colleges’ Work-Based Learning leads
to discuss and implement internal improvements by campus for scaling and
improving work-based learning for Peralta students.
Participate in Peralta’s Adult Education Consortium Working Group and
Executive Governing Board meetings to help establish a JPA for the
Consortium and Peralta as the fiscal lead for the JPA (per direction of
Peralta’s leadership).
Support the four colleges in identifying and putting in place coordinators
who will help develop the adult education career pathway programs in
partnership with our local adult school partners.
Organize and facilitate the monthly meeting of the CTE Deans from the four
Peralta Colleges to coordinate on programs, funding, regional initiatives, etc.
Organize and facilitate the monthly meeting of the Districtwide CTE
Committee to coordinate on programs, funding, regional initiatives, etc.
Help facilitate the CPT Executive Leadership Study Session
Co-Chair the SB 1070 Work-based Learning Committee to help align Peralta’s
workforce delivery systems with those of the region.
Work closely with marketing and graphic design consultants as well as the
CTE Committee to produce an updated CTE marketing brochure.
Participate in the statewide Career Advancement Academy Conference in
Sacramento with representatives from each of the Peralta Colleges.
