This program is reflective of the current economic health in the East Bay. It has been in existence since fall of 1982 and has survived the markets ups and downs over the history of the program. Merritt College offers day, evenings, online and weekend classes, students receive both certificate as well as degree programs that provides employment and promotional opportunities. Our students are given the opportunity to work in the Real Estate fields in the following capacities; Real Estate Agents and Brokers, Appraisers, Property Managers, Financiers, Land Developers, Government Service and Investors, to name a few. Real Estate is a mirror of the economy and a major influence to the health of the economy. When the indrustry is down the need for education to upgrade professional skills should be available. By completing 8 of our real estate courses greatly enhances the opportunities of our students for a brokers license and business success over those students who have completed the minimum required of three courses for a sales license. The Real Estate Department has extended its offers to the best Real Estate opportunities in the past and the department has developed six new online courses and two new courses in the process of being approved. The department will develop new courses as they relevant. The department will continue to be active with the four local real estate boards, the CA Department of Real Estate, California Real Estate Assocation and National Real Estate Association in developing professional standards for our students and the real estate industry. The future holds opportunities to expand into distant learning programs as well as programs related to RE Construction for RE agents, Loan Brokers, and the offering of the new courses Computer for RE agents and Common Interest Development (CID). The department is in the process of developing courses to meet the requirements for the Continuing Education Courses of the California Department of RE (DRE). The Real Estate Department has through the Merritt Real Estate Forum, a student body club and real estate student alumni (membership 600+ members) been doing outreach in the community to help property owners in forclosure and providing a venue for needed information to the community and businesses during the current economic crisis. The program is in need of good movie equipment to capture our ongoing guests and programs for the future students and a portable sound system to assist in providing professional features and events.
