Qualitative Assessments
CTE and Vocational: Community and labor market
relevance. Present evidence of community need
based on Advisory Committee input, industry need
data, McIntyre Environmental Scan, McKinsey
Economic Report, licensure and job placement rates,
etc.
Transfer and Basic Skills: Describe how your
course offerings address transfer, basic skills, and
program completion.
No vocational degree is offered at Merritt.
As a liberal art, music frees (liber) music frees
students to further explore and understand
themselves and their world in the context of
history through its musical/artistic output. Music
is therefore essential to Merritt’s strategy in
preparing students to be professionally and
personally qualified through completion of their
educational goals. The music classes we offer
are required for AA and Bachelor’s degrees at
UC, CSU and private colleges and universities.

VI. Strategic Planning Goals

Describe how goal applies to your program.
Advance Student Access, Success & Equity
Engage our Communities & Partners
Build Programs of Distinction
Create a Culture of Innovation & Collaboration
Develop Resources to Advance & Sustain Mission
Our classes engage a full diversity of Merritt's
population, while maintaining above average
retention rates.
Our college orchestra and college choir both
collaborate with two separate community nonprofit organizations in attracting audiences from
the Bay Area community at large.
We are the only college in Peralta that offers a
full orchestra and a choir with such high music
standards.
These performance ensembles continually
learn and perform new music, from a variety of
cultures, past and current.
Each of them secure funding from their
respective collaborative partners in order to
advance and sustain the mission of continuing
education and service to the community at
large.

VIII. Action Plan


Please describe your plan for responding to the above data. Consider curriculum,
pedagogy/instructional, scheduling, and marketing strategies. Also, please reference any cross district
collaboration with the same discipline at other Peralta colleges.
Include overall plans/goals and specific action steps.
• Add back additional course offerings immediately to meet the demands of students and achieve our
strategic goals listed above. Currently Merritt has the lowest music FTEF in the district, yet the highest
productivity.
* Maintaining regular music departmental communication via meetings and email.
• Implementation of a Music Department website for prospective students.
• Communication with administration, particularly Academic Deans and the Office of Instruction.
• Regular communication between Merritt faculty and music faculty at our sister colleges in
coordinating schedule of classes and course offerings.
• Create a new class offering in Hip-Hop Music and a voice class in popular, blues, rock, country and
R&B music styles in conjunction with CSU and UC and other universities.
IX. Needs
Please describe and prioritize any faculty, classified, and student assistant needs.
We need to add adjunct faculty in order to meet the demands of students in completing a variety of classes
that meet their G.E transfer requirements.
Please describe and prioritize any equipment, material, and supply needs.
Supply needs are minimal, but ongoing each year. Equipment needs include smart classroom equipment, in
addition to a new sound system and additional electronic keyboards, the latter which can be purchased with
Measure A funds.
Please describe and prioritize any facilities needs.
The A building is in drastic need of remodelling. There is little heat and no air conditioning and poor
ventilation. A metal roll up door negatively effects the temperature of the room, as well as the aesthetics.
We are using a space never designed as a classroom. The piano lab has no windows at all, no
ventilation. A major remodel sooner than later is essential.
