Qualitative Assessments
CTE and Vocational: Community and labor market
relevance. Present evidence of community need
based on Advisory Committee input, industry need
data, McIntyre Environmental Scan, McKinsey
Economic Report, licensure and job placement rates,
etc.
The Department should identify and apply for
grant opportunities to develop a Health
Information Technology Program. The design
of this program should include other
departments, i.e. Business, Para-Legal, and
Allied Health Programs. An articulated 2+2+2
curriculum structure should be designed to all
multi entry and exit level including 4-year
transfer connections.
Using Employment Development Department
data, Health Information Technology should be
developed to take advantage of our unique
curriculum "niche" to serve the growing
occupational needs here in the East Bay area.
Health Information Technology can provide
both transfer and workforce development
opportunities for Merritt Students.
The Preliminary McIntyre Environmental Scan
Report as of September 6, 2007 finds Younger
students (“net generation”) now enter PCCD
with more IT and media skills. Job growth with
center on computer systems design (Chart E
Industry Employment, 2004-14). A
recommended growth emerging “niche” is
digital media (Chart D). Although requiring a
Baccalaureate Degree, according to Chart F
Computer Software Engineers will be needed.
This substantiates the need for Merritt College
to keep its transfer level computer science
curriculum current and articulated with 4-year
institutions. Chart J Workforce Marketing and
Preparation is extremely enlightening and
encouraging for the CIS Department—
partnerships, curriculum and delivery initiatives.
Based on the McKinsey Economic Report, the
CIS Department should redesign and
strengthen existing programs. Here is what the
report states:
“Arts, design, and digital media is then second
of the spotlight sectors in this report’s
discussion of emerging sectors. This cluster
comprises a number of different activities that
share human creativity and artistic methods as
common roots of their success: the fine arts,
architecture, special design, animation, motion
picture and video production, music production
and publishing, recording studios, advertising,
and print publishing.”
It would behoove the CIS Department to
consider building a cross-discipline program
Page 3 of 7
with three other Merritt College departments—
Art, Business, Allied Health & Music.
Transfer and Basic Skills: Describe how your
course offerings address transfer, basic skills, and
program completion.
The CIS Department offers nine (9) articluated
transfer courses.
Basic skills are included in most CIS courses.
Due to lack of enrollment, the department is
unable to offer most department classes
without being cancelled.
Program completion is non existing at this time.
Most students must take certificate required
courses at other Peralta Colleges (Alameda,
Berkeley, Laney) and request
"Substitution/Waivers" for selected courses.
The CIS Department feeds students to other
Peralta campuses, especially for computer
science majors and other CTE certificate
programs.
