Qualitative Assessments CTE and Vocational: Community and labor market relevance. Present evidence of community need based on Advisory Committee input, industry need data, McIntyre Environmental Scan, McKinsey Economic Report, licensure and job placement rates, etc. According to California labor market information, opportunities in the Administration of Justice field will have steady openings over the next 7 years. Transfer and Basic Skills: Describe how your course offerings address transfer, basic skills, and program completion. Students in the Administration of Justice program can receive both an AA and/or a certificate in Police Science and Corrections. These courses are transferable to Universities, as well. The largest employment area will be in the area of Security. Over the next 7 years there will be a 15-20% increase in the Correctional and Security Guard fields as well. Clearly, the Administration of Justice program will be pivotal in preparing our students to enter these growing fields. The high retention percentage in the the Administration of Justice program is a positive indicator that the students are staying in class and able to develop their basic skills. As a vocational program, the students are gaining valuable hands-on skills needed for their career, as well as have the opportunity to practice basic writing skills be completing term papers, and completing short essays throughout the semester. When the students in the Administration of Justice Department graduate and/or transfer, our department is confident they are confident that our students are prepared for the workforce or to transfer to an University. Advance Student Access, Success & Equity Engage our Communities & Partners Build Programs of Distinction Create a Culture of Innovation & Collaboration Develop Resources to Advance & Sustain Mission It is important that our students are well prepared when they leave the Administration of Justice program so that they are successful, and have access to their career or university of choice. In order for AJ to be a Program of Distinction we must engage our community and build partnerships. Over the years, AJ has formed partnerships with local High Schools, the Alameda Probation Deparment, the Oakland Police Department, and with several service agencies. By strengthening these partnerships, AJ will be able to have first hand knowledge of community needs and be able to better prepare our students. The Administration of Justice Program is the only AJ program in the district. We are striving to make the AJ program at Merritt the center for Public Safety, in which well trained, and prepared students exit the program ready to work. The AJ Program has a wide range of subject areas that can be explored and collaborating with other departments is a natural next step in the program. Currently, AJ is in the process of collaborating with the Chemistry department, Paralegal Department, as well as the Cooperative Education Department. In the past, AJ collaborated with the Communication Department. By collaborating with other diciplines, our students become aware of the links between diciplines and learn that AJ is not an isolated program. Page 4 of 7 VII. The Administration of Justice program is the largest growing program in the Legal Administration Department. As a result, Adjus is now faced with inadequate room accommodations for both day and night classes. We need a larger classroom. We would like our classrooms to have suitable desks for at least 50 students, and to be equipped with Smart Board technology, and mounted televisions. We would like to design an area outdoors that we can utilize for physical training for public safety careers, as well as to reenact practical scenarios related to the field (i.e., crime scenes.) The Administration of Justice Program is planning to increase our roll in campus security by collaborating with the Merritt Safety Aid program and adding a volunteer group called Safety Cadets. Therefore, we need a location where our students can train for this campus security position. This location would also include a storage shed to store heavy equipment needed for training. This area can also be used by other outside agencies who are partners with our department. Our facility needs are important because we need to be able to put our students in a position to be highly qualified when applying for careers in the public safety field. Page 6 of 7 X.
