Purpose

This qualification is designed for people who already have experience in the pork industry as Pork Unit Managers, and who now wish to develop the skills to manage the human resource and business aspects of the pork production unit.

Holders of this qualification will have the skills to manage the care of the grower pig herd and newly weaned pigs; assess unit capacity, set production targets for KPIs, prepare a production plan, and monitor variations; formulate diets for pigs; plan a pork unit health programme; establish human resource needs; plan for recruitment, selection and induction of staff; plan work allocation and working relationships, and assess performance and training; maintain compliance with legal requirements and regulatory codes and standards; and manage interpersonal conflict. Holders will also have the knowledge of employment requirements, and employment termination procedures; the composition and contribution of feed nutrients used for pigs; disease management and the effect of disease on pig herd productivity; pig genetics, breeding, and improvement; and pig breeding programmes.

All standards in this qualification are compulsory because pork unit business management contains a set of well-defined skills and knowledge that apply across all pork production workplaces.

Candidates may already have completed the National Certificate in Pork Production (Unit

Management) (Level 5) [Ref: 1564] prior to award of this qualification. The aim of qualification [Ref: 1564] is to provide people with significant experience in the pork industry the skills to work as Pork Unit Managers.

The Agriculture Industry Training Organisation supports the concepts of continuing and lifelong education, and encourages people to consider future options on completion of this qualification, including other qualifications in Agriculture or other industries.

Special Notes

A pork production section is one part of the total pork production unit. A pork production unit is a collective term for several pork production sections. For example, a farrowing section, a grower section, and a dry sow section together make up a pork production unit.

Although this qualification is open entry, it is highly recommended that candidates complete both the National Certificate in Pork Production (Unit Management) (Level 5)

[Ref: 1564], and the National Certificate in Pork Production (Husbandry) (Level 4)

[Ref: 1563] prior to award of this qualification.
