People currently working towards this national qualification should complete its requirements by 31 December 2017. The qualification recognises that the holder has the required skills in marine engineering, navigation and seamanship and sea survival and sea safety, and in addition has skills in first aid. The qualification has a significant degree of commonality with the National Certificate in Maritime (Commercial In-shore Vessel Operations) with an optional strand in Business Operations and holders may progress towards holding both qualifications. Special Notes The Certificate of Competency (Licence to Operate) is issued in addition to this qualification following fulfilment of Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) requirements. Employers who recruit trainees must ensure that the trainees are supplied with the relevant information and procedures relating to MNZ requirements. Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). The opportunity was also taken to include unit standard 6401. Changes to structure and content included: titles, levels, and credits of reviewed unit standards updated; unit standards 4102 and 4105 replaced by unit standard 19493; unit standard 8125 replaced by unit standard 19628; unit standard 6401 added; and credit total for this qualification has increased from 97 to 102. This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards. Credit for 4102 and 4105 8125 Exempt from 19493 19628 Version 1 of this qualification and the National Certificate in Maritime (Master Commercial In-shore Vessel) [Ref: 0523] has replaced the National Certificate in Maritime with strands in Master Commercial In-Shore Vessel, and Commercial Coastal Watchkeeping (Ref: 0257).
