People credited with this unit standard are able to develop a culture conducive to innovation and creativity, and lead and manage innovation processes within the organisation. Classification Business Environment > Business Culture and Environment Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Organisation refers to a specific business entity which may be – profit or non-profit; in private, public, or voluntary sectors; a business unit, iwi, or other special-purpose body. Innovation is a process which covers the use of knowledge and information for creation and introduction of a product, service, system, or process that is new, useful, and of commercial value. Creativity is a cognitive process which establishes a relationship between concepts or objects which had not previously been linked, so that a new insight is developed. Innovation structure refers to the type of group created for, and charged with responsibility for, an innovation project. It may include groups described as innovation teams, venture teams, project teams. Values include the way in which the organisation, its employees, and representatives operate with respect to each other and the world at large. Values include the shared aspirations and beliefs which are the basis of the organisation’s mission and operations. They express the corporate culture while recognising and respecting the cultural diversity within the organisation. 2 This unit standard will be assessed on the basis of evidence of demonstrated performance in the workplace. In practice, this will call for a variety of modes of assessment and forms of evidence. Evidence is required to show consistency of performance across a range of situations and to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and skill in the principles and practices directly relating to the competent performance of outcomes and evidence requirements. Evidence requirements 1.1 Description of innovation follows a systems point of view, and identifies scope, and opportunities for change processes and forms of innovation to take place. Range change processes – linear incremental change, non-linear breakthroughs; forms of innovation include – products, services, processes, technologies, systems. 1.2 Organisational and environmental scanning methods identify sources and opportunities for successful innovation. 1.3 Recommended changes in organisational structure and management systems contribute to providing an environment conducive to innovation and creativity. 1.4 Participation in, and contribution to, the search for innovation characterise the strategic intent, and are drawn from people throughout the organisation. 1.5 Positive values accorded to innovation and creativity are recognised and communicated throughout the organisation, with recognition and reward commensurate with contribution. 1.6 Innovation structures and networks provide for differentiation in time and methods from other parts of the organisation structure, but with integrating mechanisms to facilitate communications between them. 1.7 Resources allocated to the processes of idea generation, feasibility study, technology, and market assessment and project formulation demonstrate the commitment of the organisation to the management of innovation. Outcome 2 Lead and manage innovation processes within the organisation. Evidence requirements 2.1 Innovation structure is established with membership, resources, and support, and with clarity of goals and expectations, including freedom to act autonomously and self-manage the project. 2.2 Innovation management roles are clarified and assigned to specified people (or self-assigned) as a means of using, developing, and enhancing skills. Range 2.3 Protection and support provided to innovation projects’ participants enable them to function creatively in conditions of uncertainty and risk, including the freedom to fail. 2.4 Advice and assistance are provided only so far as necessary to allow progress to be maintained and to enable individuals and groups to work autonomously. 2.5 The ways in which advice and support are provided confirm joint commitment to innovation goals, demonstrate trust in those carrying out the work, give encouragement, and reinforce confidence.
