People credited with this unit standard are able to: detail
exterior of the vehicle; buff, glaze, and polish the vehicle’s
exterior paintwork; detail vehicle surfaces other than paint;
and groom interior of the vehicle.

Detail exterior of the vehicle.
performance criteria
1.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task according to legislative
requirements.
Range:
personal safety, safety of others, equipment safety.
1.2
Examination of exterior is completed before grooming to enable prior damage to
be recorded and particular needs attended to.
1.3
The environment for detailing is selected to ensure that no outside conditions
influence or damage the job carried out.
1.4
Exterior is prepared and washed to a standard acceptable to the supervisor.
Range:
1.5
dewax, detergent and sponge or soft bristle brush or steam
cleaner.
Exterior is dried to the supervisor’s requirements.
Range:
cotton towelling, chamois.
1.6
Tar, concrete, and paint spots are removed without damage to the paintwork
and glass.
1.7
Unwanted panel transfers, logos, and stickers are removed without damage to
the paintwork and glass.
1.8
Engine compartment is cleaned to the supervisor’s requirements.

Buff, glaze, and polish the vehicle’s exterior paintwork.

Buffing, glazing, and polishing processes are selected according to the exterior
condition.
2.3
Paintwork type is determined according to the vehicle’s manufacturer's
identification plate.
2.4
Vehicle paint surface finish meets the supervisor’s requirements.

Vinyl surfaces are cleaned and treated to the supervisor’s requirements.

Tyre walls are finished to the supervisor’s requirements.
3.4
Chrome, stainless steel, alloy, and painted plastics are cleaned and polished to
the supervisor’s requirements.
3.5
Glass components are cleaned to the supervisor’s requirements.

Groom interior of the vehicle.
performance criteria
4.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task according to legislative
requirements.
Range:
personal safety, safety of others, equipment safety.
4.2
Examination of interior is completed before grooming to ensure that loose items
are stored to the satisfaction of the customer.
4.3
Upholstery is cleaned in a manner that prevents damage occurring to coverings.
Range:
vacuuming, shampoo, dry cleaning.
4.4
Interior is vacuumed to a standard acceptable to the supervisor.
4.5
Stains are removed without damage to the surface.
4.6
Vinyl and plastic surfaces are treated to the supervisor’s requirements.
4.7
Smell neutralisers are applied to the customer’s satisfaction.
4.8
Accessory fittings and controls are in the same position as they were prior to the
detailing.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for providers wishing to
develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and
