People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe a
native freshwater and a native marine fish or shellfish species;

Explanatory notes

Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hapū, the tangata
whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapū views should
be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori concepts
and practices.

Descriptions and explanations can be presented in a number of ways that may
include but are not limited to: oral presentations; visual presentations; written
presentations; whakaari; waiata and haka.

Range
Native freshwater fish and shellfish species may include but is not limited to the
following- īnanga, tuna, kokopu, piharau, paraki, kowaro, kakahi, koura, kouraura,
papaka wai Maori.
Native marine fish and shellfish species may include but is not limited to-hāpuku,
kahawai, kanae, maroro, moki, oraora, pātiki, tāmure, tarakihi, taraute, tawatawa,
ūpokohue, toheroa, tuatua, pipi, paua, tuangi, tio, kuku, tipa, pupu, ngakihi, kina.

Definition
tikanga Māori refers to appropriate or ‘right’ ways or practises that are associated to
the harvesting and processing of native freshwater fish or shellfish species and
marine fish or shellfish species.
