Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for
negotiation in relation to a personally-defined objective;
negotiate to achieve objective; and evaluate own performance
in the negotiation.

Explanatory notes
1
Definitions
Personally-defined objective relates to negotiating on one’s own behalf in relation to
own need(s) and/or want(s).
Inhibiting tactics refer to obstructive and/or offensive and/or deceptive behaviours.

Negotiation may be actual or simulated and must involve an element of opposition
and the use of inhibiting tactics by the other party.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare for negotiation in relation to a personally-defined objective.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The objective of the negotiation is defined and a range of acceptable outcomes
are identified.
1.2
The other party is identified and described in terms of the power relationships
and anticipated needs.
1.3
Consequences of non-agreement are identified for self and other party.
Range
includes – own BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated
Agreement).

Evaluate own performance in the negotiation.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Own performance is evaluated in terms of the outcome and the nature of the
relationship with opposing party.
Range
3.2
where an agreement is reached, the outcome is deemed to be fair
by both parties; where agreement is not reached, the points of
failure are identified.
Based on evidence from the negotiation, conclusions are made in terms of
improving own future performance in negotiation.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
