People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify legal
rights and obligations relating to registering and operating a
motor vehicle; describe legal rights, obligations, and protection
when purchasing a motor vehicle and when selling or disposing
of a motor vehicle.

Definitions
Private motor vehicle and motor vehicle, for the purposes of this unit standard, are
defined as a light motor vehicle, for which a Class 1 driver licence is required.
Registered person – the person who is officially recognised as legally responsible for
a vehicle.
Vehicle licensing – an annual fee paid for using public roads.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Identify legal rights and obligations relating to registering and operating a motor vehicle.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Legal obligations are identified in terms of the registered person of a motor
vehicle.
Range
1.2
Legal obligations are identified in terms of motor vehicle operation.
Range
1.3
includes - consumption of alcohol and/or other drugs, licensed as
a driver, compliance with road rules.
Legal rights and obligations are identified in relation to road traffic crashes.
Range
1.4
includes - vehicle licensing, Warrant of Fitness, safety of vehicle.
includes - driver, registered person, Police, witness;
includes - crashes involving – injury, non-injury, damage to
property including animals.
Consequences for the registered person of a motor vehicle are described in
terms of failing to meet legal obligations.

may include - involvement in crashes, hit and run, driving while
under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs, operating an
unlicensed motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without a
current Warrant of Fitness, unlicensed driving, road user charges
offences;
evidence of three is required.
Outcome 2
Describe legal rights, obligations, and protection when purchasing a motor vehicle and
when selling or disposing of a motor vehicle.
