NZQA registered unit standard 8548 version 5 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of accessing legal assistance Level 1 Credits Purpose 2 This unit standard relates to introductory knowledge and could be of particular relevance to immigrants. People credited with this unit standard are able to identify and describe legal assistance, and describe how to access Legal Aid. Evidence requirements 1.1 Situations that require legal assistance are identified and described. Range 1.2 situations may include but are not limited to – employment, housing, land claim, tenancy, consumer, criminal, immigration; evidence of three different situations is required. Legal assistance is described in terms of services provided and estimated costs. Range may include but is not limited to – legal firm, court assistance, community law centres, a specialised agency. Evidence requirements 2.1 Legal Aid is described in terms of assistance provided, how it is accessed, and availability. Range 2.2 criminal, civil, Family Court. Potential difficulties are described for a situation requiring access to Legal Aid. difficulties may include but are not limited to – ignorance of the law, limits on availability of Legal Aid, non-awareness of sources of assistance, communication barriers, cultural barriers, financial constraints, geographical isolation; evidence of three is required. Range 2.3 A strategy is described which identifies how the identified difficulties could be overcome.
