This unit standard is for people employed in the maritime trade
controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on
board at the operational level or are training to do so.
People credited with this unit standard are able to direct
firefighting operations on board a vessel in accordance with
STCW A-VI/3 competencies, control fire-fighting operations
aboard ships; organize and train fire parties; inspect and
service fire-detection and fire-extinguishing systems and
equipment; and investigate and compile reports on incidents
involving fire.

The International Standards applicable to this unit standard are the Standards of
Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for Seafarers including 2010
Manila amendments available from www.imo.org
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, which will be replaced by the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015 when it becomes effective on 4 April 2016; MARPOL 73/78;
International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972; International Ship
and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code; Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention
(1974/1988), and any subsequent amendments.

Assessment information
All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite
safety procedures (where these exceed the codes) for personal, product, and
worksite safety, and the obligations required under current legislation.
Assessment may be of evidence that is naturally occurring in the workplace or
obtained from approved instruction or during attendance at an approved course,
including practical demonstrations in spaces which provide realistic training
conditions and simulated shipboard conditions.

Outcome 1
Direct firefighting operations on board a vessel according to STCW A-VI/3.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Fire-fighting operations aboard ship are controlled in accordance with STCW AVI/3.
1.2
Fire parties are organized and trained in accordance with STCW A-VI/3.
1.3
Fire-detection and fire-extinguishing systems and equipment are inspected and
serviced in accordance with STCW A-VI/3.
1.4
Incidents involving fire are investigated and reports compiled in accordance with
STCW A-VI/3 competency.
