NZQA registered unit standard 28161 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Demonstrate knowledge of unfired pressure equipment used in the energy and chemical industry Level 3 Purpose Credits 5 This theory-based unit standard is for entry-level people working as boiler and energy and chemical process operators. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: unfired pressure equipment used in the energy and chemical industry; and unfired pressure equipment used in an energy and chemical plant. Classification Energy and Chemical Plant > Operation of Energy and Chemical Plant Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Energy and chemical plant may be in – petrochemical, agri-nutrient, power generation, dairy processing, meat processing, and wood fibre manufacturing, or other plants that operate with a combination of high temperatures, pressures, steam and/or chemicals in gas, liquid or solid form. Plant – the operational unit, equipment and/or workplace at which the person is working. Unfired pressure equipment – equipment that is operated under pressure but is not directly fired. 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of unfired pressure equipment used in the energy and chemical industry. Primary Industry Training Organisation SSB Code 101558 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 28161 version 1 Page 2 of 3 Evidence requirements 1.1 Types of unfired pressure equipment are identified and described in terms of their use. Range evidence is required of four types. 1.2 The use of carbon steel and alloy steel in the construction of unfired pressure vessels is explained in terms of its purpose. 1.3 Internal features of unfired pressure vessels are described in terms of their purpose. internal features include but are not limited to – impingement plates, deflectors, stand pipes, boots, trays, packing, demister pads, weirs, distributors. Range 1.4 External features of unfired pressure vessels are described in terms of their purpose. external features include but are not limited to – gauge glass, safety valves, compensation plates, instrumentation, vents, drains. Range Outcome 2 Demonstrate knowledge of unfired pressure equipment used in an energy and chemical plant. Evidence requirements 2.1 Unfired pressure equipment used at a plant are identified and described in terms of their types. Range evidence is required of three types of equipment. 2.2 The different types of unfired pressure equipment are identified and described in terms of the plant identification coding system and their purpose. 2.3 The components of the unfired pressure equipment are described in term of the process flows and normal operating parameters of the equipment. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
