This unit standard is intended for people employed in a landing
operation, log yard or carrying out mensuration and inventory
work.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the
principal methods used for scaling export and domestic logs;
describe log scaling procedures; demonstrate knowledge of
export and domestic log grades; and demonstrate knowledge
of features of log scaling and log volume calculation.

Explanatory notes
Definition
Worksite procedures – documented procedures used by the organisation carrying out the
work and applicable to the tasks being carried out. They may include but are not limited to
– standard operating procedures, site safety procedures, equipment operating procedures,
quality assurance procedures, housekeeping standards, procedures to comply with
legislative and local body requirements.

Describe the principal methods used for scaling export and domestic logs.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS), three dimensional (3D) and weigh
scaling measurement methods are described.

Diameter, length, and weight measurements of logs are described in
accordance with worksite procedures.
Outcome 2
Describe log scaling procedures.
Evidence requirements
2.1
How diameters are rounded and how end conditions are allowed for are
described in accordance with worksite procedures.

Log characteristics that determine domestic and export log grades are identified
and described in accordance with worksite procedures.
3.2
One log grade is explained in terms of its specifications.

Demonstrate knowledge of features of log scaling and log volume calculation.

4.1
Calibration of log scaling measurement equipment is described in accordance
with worksite procedures.
