NZQA registered unit standard 29171 version 1 Page 1 of 2 Title Carry out routine, minor or temporary maintenance of equine facilities under close supervision Level 2 Credits 5 Purpose This unit standard is intended for people who are required to carry out routine, minor, or temporary maintenance of paddocks and/or facilities where horses are housed, while working under close supervision in an equine industry context. Classification Equine>Equine Care Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Demonstration of competency must be consistent with: Workplace procedures Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 2 Candidates must demonstrate competency in either a commercial horse enterprise or a recognised voluntary equine organisation, for example not-for-profit and/or therapeutic riding organisations. 3 Evidence is required for examples across a range of types of maintenance and repairs which are routinely carried out and/or typical of the equine workplace. Routine maintenance includes clean up after a vet or farrier visit, replacement of equipment and grooming gear into its designated place, cleaning feed storage area, first aid kit maintenance, cleaning horse float. Minor maintenance include those carried out on – water supply, stable fixtures, fencing and gates, stable surrounds, minor replacements. Temporary maintenance includes maintenance made to water supply until permanent repairs can be carried out. Grounds maintenance includes mowing, raking, sweeping, and garden maintenance.
