Purpose
This unit standard is for people involved with horses which may be coming
onto or leaving the property.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify newly arrived
horse and identify and label horse gear; treat the newly arrived horse to
prevent the spread of contractable diseases or ailments to resident stock on
the property; process documentation; and despatch horse.

For this unit standard the practical assessment evidence must be provided in the
context of a commercial business operation under normal working conditions.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Identify newly arrived horse and identify and label horse gear.
Performance criteria
1.1
New horse arriving on the property is identified in accordance with stable
procedures.
Range
1.2
may include but is not limited to – details of the horse, owner
details, colour, markings, brand drawn and described.
Identification and labelling of gear which arrives with the horse distinguishes it
from gear owned by the property.
Element 2
Treat the newly arrived horse to prevent the spread of contractable diseases or ailments to
resident stock on the property.
Performance criteria
2.1
The presence of external parasites on the horse is identified in terms of type
and location.
2.2
Animal remedy to remove external parasites from the horse is used according to
manufacturer's instructions.
2.3
Horse is treated for internal parasites in a manner which causes least stress to
the horse, while ensuring it receives the full dosage.
2.4
Reasons for isolating new arrivals after treatment are outlined in terms of
preventing the spread of infection.
2.5
Signs of ill health in the horse are reported to the supervisor in accordance with
stable procedures.

Process documentation.
Performance criteria
3.1
All documentation is completed and filed in accordance with stable procedures.
Range
may include but is not limited to – arrival form, passport,
equipment details, stable return, trainer notification.
Element 4
Despatch horse.
Performance criteria
4.1
Correct horse is identified, caught, groomed, and prepared in accordance with
stable procedures.
4.2
Equipment and documentation are prepared for despatch with horse in
accordance with stable procedures.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
