Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Demonstrate knowledge of self-propelled rollers in civil construction.

Performance criteria

1.1 Self-propelled rollers are identified in terms of their types.

Range types – smooth-wheeled, drum, static, grid, pneumatic, multi-tyred, vibrating, sheepsfoot.

1.2 Rollers are described in terms of the effect of their static weight, impact force, and vibration on various materials.

Range frequency and amplitude; materials include but are not limited to – silt, clay, aggregates.

1.3 Ballasting is described in terms of adding and removing ballast and its use for specific jobs.

1.4 Rolling is described in terms of the effects of layer thickness, watering, drying, speed, ballasting, roller weight, roller pressures, and density and water content.

Range surface conditions, surface response, specified stages.

Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
