Definition
Specific design is a design that ensures compliance with the Building Act 2004 when
the construction requirements of a building deviates from, or is beyond the scope of
recognised industry standards (New Zealand Standards, Australia/New Zealand
Standards, British Standards and other published standards that govern the
construction industry).

1.1
Types of piles are identified in terms of their use.

1.2
Methods of calculating quantities of material required for pile foundations are
described, and accurate sample calculations performed in accordance with
industry practice.
1.3
Placement of piles is described in accordance with NZS 3604:1999 or specific
design.
Range
line, level and plumb, height, centres, requirements of the subfloor bracing schedule.
1.4
Provision for permanent fixings to different pile types is described in accordance
with the NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.
1.5
Provision for ventilation is described in accordance with NZS 3604:1999 or
specific design.
Element 2
Explain the purpose, requirements and construction methods for bearers, stringers and
bracing used in pile foundations.
Performance criteria
2.1
The purpose and requirements of bearers and stringers are described in
accordance with NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.
2.2
The methods of installing bearers and stringers are described in accordance
with NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.
2.3
The purpose and requirements of sub-floor bracing are described in accordance
with NZS 3604:1999 or specific design.

authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
