This unit standard is for people coordinating volunteers to
assist with specific recreation tasks and projects including oneoff events.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe
volunteering in the context of a recreation organisation; allocate
roles to volunteers within a recreation organisation; prepare
volunteers for a recreation activity; and support and
acknowledge volunteers within a recreation activity.

Explanatory notes
1
Recreation is an activity through which leisure may be experienced and enjoyed.
Recreation involves freely chosen activities engaged in for wellbeing. Recreation
activities include: sport, fitness and health, art and crafts, outdoor pursuits, hobbies,
continuing education, ngā mahi a te rēhia, and activities with a service orientation.
Participation in recreation has individual, community, and social benefits.

Organisations may include recreation and sport clubs, societies, and organisations;
territorial local authorities, and government agencies such as the Department of
Conservation.

Definition
Organisational requirements refer to the organisation’s policies and procedures and
include compliance with any applicable legislation, standards, and codes.

organisational requirements.

2.1
Volunteer requirements for a specified recreation activity are identified.

Potential volunteers are assessed against volunteer requirements and in
accordance with organisational requirements.
2.4
Volunteers are allocated to appropriate roles in accordance with organisational
requirements.
Outcome 3
Prepare volunteers for a recreation activity.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Information relating to the volunteer roles is communicated to volunteers in a
timely manner and in accordance with organisational requirements.
Range
information may include but is not limited to – communication
pathways, support networks, administration procedures, legal
requirements of the organisation and implications for individuals,
safety procedures, organisation’s culture, access to resources,
facilities, break times.
3.2
Volunteers are introduced to support people within the organisation and to any
fellow volunteers, and the roles of the support are explained, in accordance with
organisational requirements.
3.3
Activity details and requirements for the volunteer position are explained to
volunteers in accordance with organisational requirements.

3.4
The training needs of volunteers are assessed in relation to roles within the
recreation activity and in accordance with organisational requirements.
3.5
Training is organised to meet the volunteers' assessed needs and in
accordance with organisational requirements.
Outcome 4
Support and acknowledge volunteers within a recreation activity.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Volunteers are supervised according to activity details and requirements and in
accordance with organisational requirements.
4.2
Volunteers are supported and encouraged during their contribution to the
recreation activity.
4.3
Volunteers are acknowledged for their contribution to the recreation activity in
accordance with organisational requirements.

an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can

NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
