People credited with this unit standard are able to: control

supervision techniques to maintain safety in an aquatic facility;

Unit 27540, Demonstrate knowledge of aquatic supervision and
rescue techniques in an aquatic facility, or demonstrate
equivalent skills and knowledge.
Explanatory notes
1
All skills carried out in the water must be performed wearing lifeguard uniform as
specified by the aquatic centre uniform policy.
2
An aquatic facility includes: the pool or pools; water-based fun equipment and play
areas; their fixtures and surrounds; and attached facilities where they exist.

Industry best practice guidelines are specified in the National Pool Lifeguard Award
Manual, 3rd edition, 2009, and subsequent amendments, available from New Zealand
Recreation Association (NZRA), PO Box 11132, Wellington 6142.

Organisational requirements in an aquatic facility refers to the operations manual or
documented normal operating procedures at an aquatic facility, which sets out the way
in which the facility will operate on a day-to-day basis.

It is recommended that assessment against this unit standard be done in conjunction
with Unit 27542, Recognise and respond to a simulated emergency in an aquatic
facility, as the two standards assess complementary skills.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Control hazards and risks associated with an aquatic facility.
Range
fixtures, equipment, operational, activities in the water, customer behaviour and
activities.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Inspection identifies hazards and risks in terms of the safety of customers using
the aquatic facility.
1.2
Actions taken to control the hazards and risks meet the requirements of the risk
management plan for the aquatic facility.
1.3
Supervision of activities where there is inherent hazard and/or risk meets the
requirements of the organisational requirements of the aquatic facility.
1.4
The action and supervision are evaluated, and modifications are made as
required, according to the organisational requirements of the aquatic facility.
Outcome 2
Apply supervision techniques to maintain safety in an aquatic facility.
Range
positioning, scanning, observation, rotation, breaks, use of senses,
communication with customers and lifeguards, recognising people in difficulty,
recognising hazards, classifying people into customer groups, prioritising
customer groups in terms of the degree of risk they pose to themselves and
others.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Explanation of aquatic supervision techniques examines their purpose in terms of
the safety of the customers in the aquatic facility.
2.2
Applications of aquatic supervision techniques are appropriate to the nature of the
aquatic facility and meet industry best practice guidelines.
2.3
Responses to problems observed are appropriate to the situation and the people
involved, and comply with the organisational requirements of the aquatic facility.

Evidence requirements
3.1
The safety rules are identified and the rationale for each rule is explained.
3.2
Communication with customers promotes compliance with the safety rules
according to organisational requirements of the aquatic facility.
