Explanatory notes 1 An aquatic facility includes: the pool or pools; water-based fun equipment and play areas; their fixtures and surrounds; and attached facilities where they exist. 2 Definitions Employee – any person employed or contracted by the aquatic facility operator and may include lifeguards, swimming instructors, pool operations staff, programme instructors, administration, and customer service staff. Customers at risk – unsupervised children, young children, overweight, drug or alcohol affected, people with disabilities, weak or non-swimmers. Customer behaviour – behaving with disregard for the safety of others, misusing equipment. Environmental hazard – pools and spas, pool surrounds, play equipment, reception and entranceways, shower and changing areas. These may be the hazards or areas where hazards might be found. 3 Organisational requirements refers to the operations manual or documented normal operating procedures at an aquatic facility, which sets out the way in which the facility will operate on a day-to-day basis. 4 Aquatic facility safety rules are documented rules for customers using the facility to ensure that customers comply with the facility’s safety requirements. Evidence requirements 1.1 Responsibility of an employee to carry out their day-to-day operational role is explained in accordance with organisational requirements. 1.2 Own roles and responsibilities are explained in relation to organisational requirements in the aquatic facility. Range includes but is not limited to – customer supervision, accident prevention and hazard management. Outcome 2 Explain factors that contribute to safety problems in an aquatic facility. Evidence requirements 2.1 Factors that contribute to safety problems are explained in accordance with organisational requirements. Range factors include but are not limited to – customer behaviour, customers at risk, environmental hazards; evidence of two for each factor is required. Outcome 3 Monitor customer behaviour and promote compliance with aquatic facility safety rules. Evidence requirements 3.1 Hazardous customer situations and behaviours, and customers at risk are recognised in accordance with organisational requirements. 3.2 Action is taken to manage unsafe customer behaviour or activities in accordance with organisational requirements. 3.3 Communication with customers promotes compliance with aquatic facility rules in accordance with organisational requirements. Range 3.4 information communicated – identification of the at-risk behaviour or activity, identification of the risk to self or others, explanation of modified behaviour required, clarification of the individual's understanding of the explanation. Ongoing monitoring of individuals and subsequent actions ensure that the modified behaviour or situation complies with the organisational requirements.
