Classification Recreation and Sport > Recreation and Sport - Aquatics Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Competency in this unit standard must be demonstrated in a real swim teaching environment and cannot be simulated. 2 Facility policy and procedures refers to the operations manual or documented normal operating procedures at an aquatic facility, which set out the way the pool will operate on a day-to-day basis. 3 Organisational policies and procedures in this context include: any applicable code or codes of conduct, and the organisation’s swim programme, and must be used in conjunction with the policy and procedures of the facility that the swim programme is being delivered in. 4 Environmental conditions may include but are not limited to – pool space and depth, type of pool, challenge of environment for participants, disclosure of environmental hazards to participants, number of people in the pool, water temperature, water quality, weather conditions, sound level and acoustics, distractions, location of pool. 5 It is recommended that assessment against this unit standard be done in conjunction with Unit 22299, Create a swim teaching environment that is supportive of learning, Unit 22300, Develop and maintain water confidence in non-swimmers, and Unit 22301, Develop beginner swimmers’ propulsion techniques using the components of swimming strokes, as the standards assess complementary skills. Skills Active Aotearoa Limited SSB Code 101576 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 27498 version 1 Page 2 of 3 Evidence requirements 1.1 Characteristics of the participants, and the water safety and survival skills to be developed are identified in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 1.2 Participants readiness to acquire the relevant skills is determined in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 1.3 Instructional methods, drills, activities or games appropriate to the needs of the participant group are determined in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 1.4 Sufficient space and equipment for drills, activities and games is determined in accordance with organisational policies and procedures, facility policy and procedures, and environmental conditions. Outcome 2 Develop water safety and survival skills. Evidence requirements 2.1 Participant group is introduced to the water in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 2.2 Clear and accurate instruction in drills, activities and games are given in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 2.3 Demonstration of skills and technique is appropriate to the participant group in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 2.4 Performance of each participant is monitored and feedback provided as required in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 2.5 Monitoring of time and completion of drills, activities, and games is in accordance with lesson plan and organisational policies and procedures. Outcome 3 Review and adapt teaching techniques. Evidence requirements 3.1 Feedback from participants is sought and responded to in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 3.2 Aspects needing further emphasis or attention in future sessions are identified in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. Evidence requirements 4.1 Water safety and survival skill development of each individual is assessed in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 4.2 Water safety and survival skill achievement of each individual is recorded in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.
