NZQA Expiring unit standard 6150 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Title Analyse and explain the effects of ture Pākehā on the way Māori interact with the natural world Level 4 Credits 6 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain the effect of a ture Pākehā on the way Māori interact with the natural world; analyse the role and function of the Waitangi Tribunal set up from the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975; and identify the Office of Treaty Settlements (OTS) proposals to settle Māori land claims before the Waitangi Tribunal and analyse how this affects the way Māori interact with the natural world. Classification Environment Māori > Māori Environmental Management Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 The Syllabus for Schools: Forms 5 to 7 Geography, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 1990, will provide the required skills reference for teachers and students. 2 The context of the inquiries is limited to local rohe/takiwā. Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi/hapū, the tangata whenua/mana whenua view will take precedence. However other iwi/hapū views should not be excluded. Different views enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori geographic concepts and practices. Issues associated with defining a Māori view can also be identified and described. Tangata whenua authorities are an important part of the moderation of these unit standards. 3 Descriptions and explanations can be presented in a number of ways, eg oral, visual, written, whakaari, and waiata. 4 Ture – laws. Ture Pākehā that impact on the way Māori interact with the natural world may include but are not limited to the Resource Management Act 1991; Te Ture Whenua Māori/Māori Land Act 1993; State-Owned Enterprises Act 1986; Fisheries Act 1983, 1996; Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975. Outcome 2 Analyse the role and function of the Waitangi Tribunal set up from The Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975. Evidence requirements 2.1 The analysis identifies the role and function of the Waitangi Tribunal in relation to the settlement of Māori land claims. 2.2 The analysis includes two local claimant examples to illustrate the impact of Waitangi Tribunal recommendations on the way Māori interact with the natural world. 2.3 The analysis makes conclusions about the impact of Waitangi Tribunal recommendations on the way Māori interact with the natural world. Outcome 3 Identify the OTS proposals to settle Māori land claims before the Waitangi Tribunal and analyse how this affects the way Māori interact with the natural world. Evidence requirements 3.1 The analysis identifies the OTS (set up from The Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975) proposals to settle Māori land claims. 3.2 The analysis includes two local examples to identify the effects of the OTS proposals to settle Māori land claims. 3.3 The analysis provides conclusions about the effect of the OTS proposals on the way Māori interact with the natural world. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
