NZQA registered unit standard 6144 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Title Explain wāhi tapu in relation to how Māori manage the environment Level 3 Purpose Credits 5 This unit standard is for people who have an interest in the management and protection of taonga and/or sites of significance to whānau/hapū. People credited with this unit standard are able to explain wāhi tapu in relation to Māori environmental management; and explain how wāhi tapu is managed in relation to the environment. Classification Environment Māori > Wāhi Tapu Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 The context of the assessment of this unit standard is limited to the local rohe or takiwā. Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapū views should be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori concepts and practices. 2 The definitions of Māori words and concepts must be verified by the local iwi or hapū in the area the assessment takes place. 3 Assessment against this unit standard may include but is not limited to – oral presentations, visual presentations, written presentations, whakaari, waiata, haka, mōteatea. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Explain wāhi tapu in relation to Māori environmental management. Evidence requirements 1.1 The explanation identifies and describes three local examples in relation to how Māori manage the environment. 1.2 The explanation describes local tikanga associated with the three examples given above. Outcome 2 Explain how wāhi tapu is managed in relation to the environment. Range a minimum of three wāhi tapu excluding the local examples covered in outcome 1. Evidence requirements 2.1 The explanation describes the tikanga associated with the wāhi tapu. 2.2 The explanation gives reasons for the importance of tapu in the local protection and use of the wāhi tapu.
