Strategic purpose
statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the tourism, travel, or aviation
industry with individuals who can support and enhance the visitor experience,
and through their skills and knowledge uphold the importance of tourism to
the New Zealand economy. The qualification will benefit the community by
enhancing New Zealand’s tourism visitor experiences and bringing economic
benefits to the country.
Graduates with the Visitor Experience strand will be able to engage with, and
support visitors in a variety of Tourism visitor experience settings. Applied
skills and knowledge will be at entry level to meet the needs of a Tourism
business employing new staff and seasonal workers, working under limited
supervision.
Graduates with the Tourism and Travel strand will have core knowledge, skills
and personal attributes sufficient for entry level positions in the New Zealand
Tourism and Travel industry. Holders of this qualification will be capable of
operating at an entry level under limited supervision.
Graduates of the Aviation strand will have core aviation knowledge, skills and
personal attributes sufficient for entry level positions in the New Zealand
Aviation industry. Holders of this qualification will be capable of operating at
an entry level under limited supervision.
Indigenous values of manaakitanga and whanaungatanga in relation to travel
and tourism may be encompassed in the holistic outcomes of this
qualification.

profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

implement basic customer service skills, applying appropriate
communication, literacy and numeracy skills, to enhance the visitor
experience
-
apply workplace practices required of an aviation, tourism or travel
workplace including: teamwork, timeliness, and compliance with relevant
Acts and health and safety legislation.
Graduates with the Visitor Experience strand will also be able to:
-
proactively engage with and support visitors to enhance their visitor
experience, through using in-depth local knowledge on destination
attributes and tourism offerings for their region.
Graduates with the Tourism and Travel strand will also be able to:
-
apply knowledge of major New Zealand tourism destinations in terms of

characteristics relevant to visitors to enhance the visitor experience
-
recognise the importance of the tourism and travel industry to the New
Zealand economy, including the structure and operations of the New
Zealand inbound and outbound tourism and travel industries to
demonstrate an understanding of the context they work within.
Graduates with the Aviation strand will also be able to:

apply knowledge of aviation security, dangerous goods, and aviation law
to an aviation sector workplace
-
apply knowledge of aviation terminology, principles of flight, and key
aircraft components to an aviation sector workplace.
Education
pathway
This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Tourism (Level 4)
with Operations and Visitor Information endorsements [Ref: 2202], the New
Zealand Certificate in Tour Guiding (Level 4) [Ref: 2203], or the New Zealand
Certificate in Travel (Level 4) [Ref: 2204].
Employment
pathway
Holders of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to work in a
variety of entry level roles within Tourism, Travel, or the wider Aviation sector.
Roles may include:
Visitor experience – attraction assistants, front office position, ticket sales
Travel and Tourism – reservation consultant, visitor host, booking assistant,
rental vehicle operations, front desk administration
Aviation – passenger services.

Qualification award
This qualification is awarded by the accredited provider. The formal
certification document will include the NZQF logo, ServiceIQ logo, and the logo
of the tertiary education organisation offering the programme of training
leading to the award of this qualification.
Evidence
requirements for
assuring
consistency
All TEOs either arranging training or delivering programmes that lead to the
award of the qualification are required to participate in a consistency process
scheduled by NZQA.

Processes may include:

recognition for people who have worked in industry for a period of time
who have not had any formal recognition of their skills

assisting people to upgrade previously gained qualifications

credit for learning achieved in previously gained qualifications that aligns
with outcomes in this qualification.
Accredited providers delivering programmes that lead to award of this
qualification must transfer credit and recognise prior learning in accordance
with their own credit recognition policies and procedures.
Credit transfer will be automatic where assessment standards are used for
assessment within programmes of study or training leading to this qualification.

Replacement
information
This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Tourism (Core Skills)
(Level 3) [Ref: 0876].
People currently working towards the replaced qualification may either complete the requirements for
that qualification by 31 December 2017 or transfer to this qualification. The last date for entry into
programmes leading to Ref: 0876 is 31 December 2015.
It is the intention of ServiceIQ that no existing trainee should be disadvantaged by these transition
