Recommendations from Curriculum Committee
The Curriculum Committee met on February 28, 2011 to consider the recommendations outlined below. The
accompanying table summarizes the results.
Course Modifications:
The following course modifications were recommended:
HLTH 3013, HPET 3333, HPET 3383, PSY 4313, PSY 4423, PSY 4433, and FAMS 4153
Of the remaining course modifications, both HLTH 3243 and PSY 2323 were tabled pending further information
which will be requested from the departments.
ECEC 2233 and ECEC2223 were tabled pending action on a proposed new program since they are both
requirements for that program.
Course Addition:
The addition of MM 3991-3 is recommended for approval. This provides a forum for splitting the multimedia
workshops away from the special topics heading. It is not an increase in the number of workshops, just a change
in designation.
ECEC 4333, PSY 3363, PSY 3373, FAMS 4333, and FAMS 4702 were tabled as they are requirements in a new
program that was also tabled until our March 28, 2011 meeting.
Program Modification:
B.S. in Elementary Education:
Add a special education option to allow students to sit for that state exam. After recommending approval of this
change, the Curriculum Committee had a discussion are regarding whether the term option really fits. Most
degrees with options require a student to pick one of the options – this approach would require a student to select
an option or no option. If feasible, there does not seem to be a problem. In personal discussions with Dr.
Vanderslice, it is clear that these four additional courses must be some part of a program to be considered valid
for state testing purposes. The bottom line is the Curriculum Committee recommended approval of this change.
B.M.E.:
The Curriculum Committee recommends approval of the requested change. The change would clarify that
vocalists taking the Minor Lesson Field would be required to take keyboarding and keyboardists would be
required to take the vocalist option.
New Program:
A Bachelor of Science in Family and Child Studies was proposed through psychology. The Curriculum
Committee determined that it needed more time to examine the request since it was a late agenda item addition. It
will be considered at the March 28 meeting of the Curriculum Committee.
Miscellaneous:
Delete minor in Human Ecology:
The BS in Human Ecology is no longer offered and the expertise and course offerings are changing. The
committee recommends the deletion of the minor in Human Ecology.
Modify minor in Family Science:
The adjustment requested in this minor involves courses that are not yet recommended for approval thus this
recommendation is tabled until action is taken on those.
