Classification Social Science Studies > Psychology Available grade Achieved, Merit, and Excellence Criteria for Merit The analysis and report include a clear presentation of the research findings with valid conclusions derived from data analysis, and a discussion of key strengths and/or limitations of the research activity. Criteria for Excellence The analysis and report include a comprehensive presentation of the research findings with suggestions for two or more relevant improvements to the research activity with reference to elements such as validity and reliability. Reference may be made to previous research design in a related topic. Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Data analysis refers to – interpreting statistics such as mean, median, mode, range, percentiles, and may be represented using graphs, tables, charts. Research methods refer to the quantitative and qualitative approaches taken to help understand and explain psychological phenomena. Research methods for gathering data in psychology include – experiment, observation, survey, interviews, case study, psychometrics/tests and testing. Research steps refer to the series of steps associated with the scientific method that is used in psychological research. Scientific method is the systematic approach to scientific thought that emphasises the centrality of observation and analysis in scientific enquiry. 2 For the purposes of this unit standard, analysis is based on real life or simulated problems where psychology can have a bearing. The scenario(s) should be sensitive to safety, privacy, gender, cultural, and other individual needs. 3 This unit standard can be awarded with an Achieved, Merit, or Excellence grade. For the Achieved grade to be awarded, all outcomes must be achieved as specified in the outcome statement(s). For Merit or Excellence grades to be awarded, the candidate must meet the Merit or Excellence criteria specified above. Evidence requirements 1.1 The psychological research activity is conducted, analysed and reported on according to the research steps associated with the scientific method used in psychological research. research steps include – identifying problem, establishing hypothesis and/or aim and/or open research question, consider published research, ethical consideration, determining research method(s), gathering data, data analysis, stating conclusion(s) derived from the data, acknowledging source material, identifying the strengths and limitations of the activity.
