UNITED NATIONS LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAMME LEARNING SERVICE, OHRM ENGLISH THROUGH MEDIA Course Code: E6L3 Duration: Description: Objectives: This course is held twice a week for 12 weeks in the lunch time period or once a week (for two hours) in the evening. (Please check posted schedules for dates and time.) Media excerpts are used as a ‘textbook.’ Students spend approximately 30 to 40 minutes of each class viewing videotapes of television programmes, film clips, or listening to radio broadcasts. Students are also given exercises designed to sharpen listening skills and increase familiarity with the vocabulary and expressions used in conventional ‘media’ English. This course will provide participants the opportunity to: Eligibility: Practise deciphering ‘fast-spoken’ English by analysing the common phrasing patterns and speech reductions of native speakers Understand vocabulary and idiomatic expressions used in media broadcasts Make active use of the new vocabulary studied Learn vocabulary-expanding techniques than can be utilised while watching or listening to media broadcasts at home.
