UNITED NATIONS LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAMME WRITNG LETTERS AND MEMORANDA Course Code:AND E4W3/1 WRITING LETTERS MEMORANDA E4W3 Duration: This course is held once a week (3:30 – 5:30 p.m. or 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.) for twelve weeks. (Please check posted schedules for dates and time.) Description: Participants follow United Nations formats to produce work-related correspondence that is simple, clear and free from the kind of errors that impede understanding. Objectives: This course will provide participants with the opportunity to: Practise stating the purpose of correspondence as early and as clearly as possible for an intended audience Use a variety of techniques for getting started Develop paragraphs that are unified and coherent Use parallelism and other textual devices to create written messages that are reader-friendly Develop sentences that are free from error Write in a style that is clear and direct, whenever appropriate Write in a tone that is determined by the reader, the purpose and situation Revise with the intended reader and purpose in mind. Eligibility: English Programme Level 7+ (If the course is held from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., participants need a supervisor’s permission.)
