Welcome to Descriptive Chemistry, CHEM 1004, offered by Cameron University. This course serves as four hours of physical science general education credit and is also recommended for those planning to take General Chemistry I, CHEM 1364/CHEM 1361, who have not had previous chemistry. My name is Dr. Gary Buckley and I will be the instructor for the course. My office hours and location are a little strange for the summer 2011 offering of this course. Please pay attention to the following information regarding my contact information in relation to the date ranges. Prior to May 11: Office location: Sciences Complex, Room 225F, Cameron University campus Contact phone: 580-581-2885 FAX: 580-581-7958 e-mail: gbuckley@cameron.edu Use the phone number here to contact me if you have questions before class starts. After May 11: Office location: Out-of-State Contact phone: 580-917-0151 FAX: 580-581-7958 e-mail: gbuckley@cameron.edu Use the phone number here to contact me if your computer or Blackboard is down after May 11, 2011. e-mail Response Time: e-mail response times will typically be within 24 hours of receiving your e-mail. Over the summer of 2011, I will normally be working this course sometime between the hours of 6:00 pm CDT until midnight each day. I will check in during those times – I won’t be always present during those times. I anticipate working this course frequently on weekends, but will likely be online Saturday mornings between 7:00 am CDT until 9:00 am CDT and on Sundays from 5:00 pm CDT until 7:00 pm CDT. Startup Steps: If you have never taken an online course before, I recommend taking the “Blackboard Preparation Course for Students” by going to the link: http://www.cameron.edu/online/student_prep.html This will provide you with instructions for logging into Blackboard. Once into the system, you will see the course entitled “Blackboard Preparation for Students” under My Courses. Completing this preparation course will give you an overview of working within the Blackboard environment. Under Course Documents you will find eight sections by week. Click on Week 1 and you will find five units, each of which contains a brief PowerPoint slide presentation related to the material in that particular unit. The intention is that you read associated sections in the textbook for each unit, look at its PowerPoint presentation, and take the self-assessment quiz found under Assignments. The quiz at the end of week 1 is over aspects of the syllabus and your ability to work with Blackboard. The content quizzes start with Quiz #2.
